The first teaser trailer for “Kazantzakis” the new biopic by Yannis Smaragdis about the famous writer came into light a few days ago.
The film, a greek-french co-production tells the life story of Nikos Kazantzakis and the events that molded him into the man he became. The great Cretan writer used to say that his life was defined by his travels and his dreams. Yannis Smaragdis -who has earned a place as a film biographer with films about Kavafis and El Greco among others- travelled to Crete, Athens, Aegina, the south of France, Berlin and Vienna for the shooting of film.
Currently in post-production, the film will open in greek cinemas in October. Odysseas Papaspiliopoulos and Stefanos Linaios portray the writer in younger and older ages and Marina Kalogirou will play the wife of the writer, Eleni Kazantzaki. Zeta Douka portrays Melina Mercouri and Alexandros Kollatos plays her husband Jules Dassin, while the late Stathis Psaltis portrayed the priest and Thodoris Atheridis will play Giorgis Zorbas (from the well known work of Kazantzakis that became a film with Anthony Quinn in the role of Zorbas).
Kazantzakis was a greek writer, whose novels included Zorba the Greek (published 1946 as Life and Times of Alexis Zorbas), Christ Recrucified (1948), Captain Michalis (1950), and The Last Temptation of Christ (1955). He also wrote plays, travel books, memoirs and philosophical essays such as The Saviors of God: Spiritual Exercises. Widely considered a giant of modern Greek literature, Kazantzakis was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in nine different years.
