The films Suntan and Thread lead “Iris” film award nominations, given by the Hellenic Film Academy (the “greek Oscars”). The first is nominated for 11 awards and the second for 10, among others for best film and best director awards.

Both films represent a modern cinema, with Thread being an almost experimental film with a brilliant performance by Sophia Kokkali (who is nominated for a Best Actress Award). Park by Sophia Exarhou is also nominated for six awards.

Mythopathy by Tasos Boulmetis is nominated for 8 awards, while Amerika Square by Yannis Sakaridis vies for six awards, among others for Best Actor for Vassili Koukalani

The Boy and Felizol have a double nomination in the music category: Felizol for Thread and Suntan, while The Boy for Thread (he co-wrote the music with Felizol) and Park. Director The Boy (aka Alexandros Voulgaris) has four personal nominations (for Directing and Production Design for the Thread as well as two in music).

It has to be noted that big commercial hits like “Roza of Smyrna” or “Perfect Strangers” are almost absent from the nominations (Roza has only one nomination).

The 8th awards ceremony will take place on the 21st of March.
